Fence installation in Sandy

Local know-how

Sandy runs from the valley floor up the east bench toward Little Cottonwood and Bells canyons, with established neighborhoods, mature trees and plenty of older wood fences due for replacement.

Replacing an old wood fence with a vinyl privacy fence or Trex composite fence ends the staining for good. Out front, Sandy allows 4 ft for open fences like ornamental steel and 3 ft for solid ones, and side and back yards take a 6 ft privacy fence.

Before you pick a style, here is what Sandy allows.

Fence rules in Sandy

Know before you build

  • Side and rear yards: up to 6 ft.

  • Required front yard: 3 ft for solid fences, 4 ft for open fences like wrought iron.

  • On a corner lot, the street-side fence can reach 6 ft beyond 60 ft from the intersection.

  • On a slope, a fence can reach 7 ft if it averages no more than 6½ ft.

  • A fence on a retaining wall can total 11 ft combined, and posts and pillars can rise 12 in above the fence.

Permits

Sandy’s fencing chapter doesn’t list a permit for a standard residential fence. We confirm with the city for your lot before we build.

What it means for your fence

A 6 ft privacy fence fits your side and back yard. Out front, a 4 ft ornamental steel fence counts as open, so it fits; solid front fences stop at 3 ft. Vinyl, wrought iron and wood are all on Sandy’s approved materials list.

Narrow it down in three questions

  • How much do you want to see through it? For full privacy, choose vinyl, Fence Trac or Trex. To keep the view, choose ornamental steel or semi-privacy vinyl.

  • What look is your home and street? Match the style tag: Transitional, Classic, Modern or Traditional. We design to your HOA’s guidelines too.

  • How little upkeep do you want? Vinyl just needs a rinse. Ornamental steel, Fence Trac and Trex never need stain or paint.

"Atlas did a phenomenal job on our black 4 ft metal fencing! Our yard was not just a square to work with. We have different levels of cinder block retaining walls that are curved… Tyson went above and beyond to make the necessary alterations to make everything fit seamlessly and it turned out better than we could have expected!"

"Tyson was on the ball and communicated professionally and often. Every other fencing company we looked at ghosted us, or was flaky. Highly recommend!"
